Concrete Canoe competition

The ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills they will need in their careers.  The event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.

Steel Bridge competition

This inter-collegiate challenge requires civil engineering students to design and fabricate a steel bridge.  ASCE-UTSA has been an active participant in the steel bridge competition since 1989.  In the 20 years UTSA has participated, we have brought home four 1st place trophies for overall performance as well as numerous category awards.

SAE Formula One competition

Formula SAE is an international collegiate design competition that challenges students to conceive, design, fabricate and race a small formula-style race car. Over 250 teams from around the world compete in at least one of the eight competitions which are held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Australia, and Japan. There are very few restrictions on the design of the car, allowing students to express their knowledge, creativity, and imagination. The cars are judged in both static and dynamic events, which evaluate them in categories such as handling, performance, braking, endurance, manufacturability, design decision making process, cost, and market strategy. In addition to competing in a world-class competition, dedicated young engineers gain valuable experience on the most relevant, team-oriented engineering project available to students. UTSA’s interdisciplinary team includes mechanical engineers, graphic design artist, and MBAs.

CITE competition

Focusing on student entrepreneurial activities, CITE hosts a biannual $100K Student Technology Venture Competition to give students hands-on experience as early stage entrepreneurs. Teams of senior business and engineering students work throughout the semester to develop a technology demonstrator and business plan to successfully develop a new company. The engineering students create a new technology product, and the business students create the business plan for commercialization of the product.

Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash

The Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash challenges students of all majors to design and build a medieval trebuchet (or catapult) that will launch and destroy a pumpkin. In recent years, winning teams have launched pumpkins up to 700 feet. The event is hosted by The UTSA College of Engineering and the College of Engineering Student Council.
